Data Vault Case Studies from Indigo AG, Tokio Marine and Argenta

Whether you are involved in building a Data Warehouse from scratch, or trying to upgrade or redesign an existing one, there are many similar challenges and lessons that can be learned. The third of the UK Data Vault User Group’s virtual meetings heard about the experiences of three Data Vault users – and most importantly the lessons they have learned during their “journey.”

Indigo AG

Veronika Durgin has led Indigo AG’s drive to utilise Data Vault 2.0 to create a Data Warehouse from scratch in her company’s mission to improve grower profitability and consumer health in a more sustainable manner – utilising microbiology and digital technology. Having the ability to start with a fresh and blank canvass has been both a blessing and a challenge for Veronika’s team. With none of the legacy problems of dealing with old Data Warehouses – or trying to marry up a plethora of different systems – she speaks about her experiences and Indigo’s plans for the future. She entertainingly characterises them as The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

Tokio Marine

Talking of companies facing the challenge of how to integrate older reporting systems into a system fit for modern data enterprise, Tokio Marine’s Adam Smith’s presentation is equally fascinating. Tokio Marine is one of the world’s biggest specialist insurers – handling everything from valuable racehorses to insuring international corporations’ risks in virtually every field of enterprise. Adam talks his way through how Tokio Marine developed its Data Warehouse 10 years ago with a traditional business-driven data model.

The company is now planning and designing a new largely automated Data Warehouse – using the power of the Snowflake data platform and Erwin Data Intelligence for automation.

Adam emphasises that crucially the original data model has remained unchanged during that decade – and has been crucial to the department’s success. His conclusions on the lessons learned so far in the project include an assessment of the role of the Data Lakeand the benefits of automation.

Argenta

Finally, Belgium-based Vaultspeed has been helping Argenta – one of that country’s top five banks – meet its mission to become increasingly data driven. Vaultspeed’s Jonas De Keuster helped Argenta’s Programme Manager Tim Scott’s team to build a new Data Warehouse using Data Vault. Their joint presentation talked through the process, step-by-step and the challenges it had to overcome in order to meet Argenta’s key criteria. That included making it future-proof, delivering continuous value as well as making it fully auditable.

Regulatory reporting is a key function for any financial institution’s data system. Their key lesson was to plan integration based on the client’s functional requirements – rather than dumping every source system into the Data Vault. Standardising and automating the process wherever possible shortend the timescale to get any project to market. Those lessons are at the heart of the UK Data Vault User Group’s aim of sharing knowledge and experience of building Business Intelligence platforms using Data Vault 2.0.
